Etymology

مَوْطِن comes from the Semitic root و-ط-ن (w-ṭ-n), which carries the sense of settling or dwelling in a place. The م- prefix turns the root into an ism makān, a noun of place, so مَوْطِن literally names the place where settling happens. The same root gives Arabic its everyday word for homeland, وَطَن, and later coinages for citizen and naturalization.
