Etymology
بِيض comes from the Semitic triliteral root ب-ي-ض (b-y-ḍ), which carries the core sense of whiteness. This root also produced the singular adjectives أبيض and بيضاء, the abstract noun بياض (whiteness), and, through the idea of a white shell or surface, the word بيضة (egg). بِيض itself is the broken plural pattern فِعْل built on that root, used mainly for groups of people.
