Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root ج-م-ع (j-m-ʕ), meaning to gather or collect. From this root comes the verbal noun جَمْع (jam', gathering), and the abstract-noun suffix ـِيَّة (-iyya) turns it into جَمْعِيَّة, literally the state or quality of being gathered. In modern usage it settled into the sense of a formal association or society, a body of people gathered for a shared purpose.
