Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root j-m-ʿ, which means to gather or collect. مَجْمُوعَة is the feminine of the passive participle مَجْمُوع, meaning gathered or summed, so it literally names a set of things brought together. The same root gives جَمَعَ to gather, جُمُعَة Friday (the day of gathering), and جَامِع mosque.
