Etymology

مَجْمُوع comes from the Arabic root ج-م-ع (j-m-ʿ), meaning to gather or collect. It is the passive participle of جَمَعَ (jamaʿa, "he gathered"), so it literally means "that which has been gathered". Over time this sense narrowed in everyday and academic use to "total" or "sum", the gathered result of adding things up. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
