Etymology
مَلام comes from the Arabic root ل-و-م (l-w-m), which carries the sense of blaming or reproaching someone. The verb لامَ يَلومُ means to blame, and مَلام is its verbal noun, formed on the maf'al pattern used for hollow roots. In that pattern the root's middle weak letter waw shifts to a long alif, turning the expected malwam into malaam. This is a native Semitic root, not an Indo-European one.
