Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root ك-ف-ف, tied to the verb كفّ, meaning to hold back or restrain, and the noun كفّ, the palm of the hand, the part of the body that closes over and encloses something. كافّة is a feminine active-participle form of that root, so its base sense is close to that which encloses or leaves nothing outside. Over time it settled into the fixed meaning all, the whole, used mainly in formal writing. It is a native Semitic word, so no Indo-European root or cognates apply.
