Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ع-ق-د (ʕ-q-d), meaning to tie or knot. The verb عقّد, a Form II derivative, means to complicate, literally to tie something into knots. تعقيد is the verbal noun of that verb, so it names the resulting state of being knotted up, that is, complexity.
