Etymology
بَطاطِس entered Arabic as a loanword during the period of European and British contact with Egypt in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most accounts trace it to English "potatoes," with the final -s absorbed as part of the borrowed word rather than treated as a native Arabic plural marker. English "potato" itself comes from Spanish "patata," a blend of Taino "batata" (sweet potato) and Quechua "papa" (potato). The word has no native Arabic root and does not fit the standard triliteral system.
