Etymology
The noun comes from the triliteral root خ-ط-ر (kh-ṭ-r). The root's older sense is to swing, sway, or be set in motion. From the idea of something put in motion or placed at stake grew the meaning of risk, and from risk came danger. The related verb خاطَرَ means to wager or stake.
