Etymology
عَرْض comes from the Semitic triliteral root ع-ر-ض, which links the idea of breadth with the act of turning a thing's broad side toward someone to be seen. From the verb عَرَضَ, to present or display, the noun carries two everyday senses: the width of an object and the showing or offering of it. Modern Arabic uses it for the width of a road, a theater show, a sales offer, and a slide presentation alike.
