Etymology

مُهَنْدِس is the active participle of the quadriliteral verb هَنْدَسَ (handasa), meaning to measure, design, or engineer. Arab lexicographers trace the root back to a borrowing from Persian, where andāza meant measure or proportion, tied to early surveying and irrigation work. Over time handasa came to mean geometry and engineering broadly, and muhandis settled as the word for the person who practices it.
