Etymology

The root h-n-d-s is not native to Arabic. Classical lexicographers trace it to the Persian word andāza, meaning measurement or proportion. Arabic speakers reshaped this loan into a native-looking four-consonant root and built a verb, handasa, meaning to measure out or design, from it. The noun هَنْدَسَة is the verbal noun of that verb, and it first meant geometry before its sense widened to cover engineering in general.
