Etymology
مُسْتَخْدَم is the passive participle of the Form X verb اِسْتَخْدَمَ (istakhdama), "to use" or "to employ." That verb builds on the triliteral root خ-د-م, which carries the core sense of serving. Form X in Arabic often marks seeking or causing an action, so istakhdama literally means to cause something to serve you, that is, to put it to use. The passive participle then denotes the thing that has been put to that use.
