Etymology

تَعَرُّض is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَعَرَّضَ, built on the triliteral root ع ر ض (ʿ-r-ḍ), whose core sense is width or breadth and, by extension, presenting something across a path. Form V adds a reflexive sense, so تَعَرَّضَ means to put oneself in the way of something, to be subjected to it, or to accost it. The maṣdar تَعَرُّض simply names that event or state of exposure.
