Etymology
دانى comes from the Arabic triliteral root د-ن-و, which carries the core sense of nearness or closeness. The base verb دنا (Form I) means simply to draw near. دانى is the Form III derivation, and Form III in Arabic typically adds a reciprocal or comparative shade to a root's meaning, so where دنا means to approach, دانى means to try to be near something else, in practice to rival it or come close to matching it.
