Etymology

The root ف-ص-ل (f-ṣ-l) means to separate, cut off, or decide. فاصِل is the active participle on the فاعِل pattern, so it literally means 'a thing that separates.' The same root gives فصل (chapter, season, court ruling), فصيلة (category, blood type), and انفصال (secession). It is a native Semitic root rather than an Indo-European one.
