Etymology
The word came into Arabic from French "kilomètre" during the modern spread of the metric system in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. French built the term from Greek roots: "khilioi", meaning thousand, and "metron", meaning measure. Arabic simply transliterated the French word rather than translating it, which is why it keeps its foreign shape and does not follow a native Arabic root pattern.
