Etymology
Kayy is the verbal noun (masdar) of the Arabic verb kawā, meaning to burn, sear, or brand with a heated implement. The root k-w-y has a weak middle radical (waw), and in this masdar pattern the waw assimilates into the final yaʾ, turning the expected form kawy into kayy. The word belongs to the Semitic language family, not the Indo-European one, so it has no PIE root.
