Etymology

Ghinā comes from the Arabic triliteral root gh-n-y (غ ن ي), whose base verb ghaniya means to be rich or to have enough. The noun ghinā is the abstract, mass-noun form of that root, denoting the state of wealth or sufficiency rather than a countable thing. Classical usage extends it beyond money to any kind of sufficiency, including contentment of the soul.
