Etymology

Arabic lexicographers describe أُسْطُوانَة as an arabization of a Persian word for pillar or column, brought into Arabic with a prosthetic alif at the front. In classical usage it meant a supporting pillar, as in mosque architecture. Modern Arabic broadened the word to the geometric solid, the cylinder, and from there to a gas cylinder, a phonograph record, and colloquially a CD.
