Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ʿ-l-m, meaning to know. Doubling the middle radical produces the fa''āl pattern, which intensifies a quality, so ʿallām means one who knows to an extreme or complete degree. In practice the word survives almost only in the Quranic phrase ʿallāmu l-ghuyūb, Knower of the unseen, an epithet of God.
