Etymology
بالون entered Arabic as a direct loan from French ballon, which itself came from Italian pallone, an augmentative of palla, meaning ball. The word spread across European languages alongside the invention of inflatable rubber and hot-air balloons in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Arabic simply absorbed the international term along with the object. It carries no native Arabic root and is treated in dictionaries as a foreign borrowing.
