Etymology

The word entered Arabic in the twentieth century as a loan from French démocratique (or English democratic), which both trace back to Greek dēmokratikos, from dēmokratia: dēmos, "people," plus kratos, "power, rule." Arabic first borrowed the noun دِيمُقراطِيَّة (democracy) as a single unanalyzed stem, then attached its native nisba suffix -iyy to form the adjective. The Greek dēmos element has no secure Indo-European etymology and may be a pre-Greek substrate word, so no PIE root is given for it.
