Etymology

غَدا comes from the Semitic root غ-د-و, tied to the idea of going out at first light. In early Arabic it simply meant to set off in the morning, the counterpart of راح, which meant to go in the evening. Over time grammarians folded it into the small set of verbs known as the sisters of كان, where it lost its literal time sense and came to mean simply became. Modern formal Arabic still uses it this way, especially in news and literary writing.
