نجعto take effect, to be nourishing or beneficial
ناجعeffective, efficacious
نجعةa quest or journey in search of pasture and rain

Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ن-ج-ع, which centers on something taking effect or nourishing, as when food or advice truly benefits a person. Bedouins used the related verb انتجع for setting out in search of land with fresh rain and pasture. مُنْتَجَع is the noun of place built from that verb: literally, the spot a group sought out because it would sustain them. Modern Arabic kept the sense of a sought-out destination but shifted it from pasture to leisure, giving today's meaning of resort.
