Etymology

بيولوجي is a modern borrowing built on بيولوجيا (biology), which Arabic took from French biologie or English biology. Those European words trace to Greek bios (life) and logos (study, word). Arabic did not translate the concept with native roots; it imported the whole stem and attached its own nisba suffix -ي to turn the noun into an adjective. The word spread through Arabic scientific and educational writing in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
