Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ط-ر-ق (ṭ-r-q), whose core sense is a sharp, repeated strike. That core sense branches into knocking on a door, hammering metal, and, in older usage, arriving somewhere at night, since a night traveler was someone who had to knock to be let in. The same root gave Arabic طريق (road), because a road was originally a track beaten by repeated footfall.
