Etymology
تَوَرُّط is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَوَرَّطَ, built on the root و-ر-ط by doubling the middle radical in the تَفَعُّل pattern. The root's base noun, وَرْطَة, means a mire, pit, or predicament, literally a place where one gets physically stuck. The Form V verb extended this to a reflexive sense, to get oneself stuck, and by the modern period the noun settled into its common meaning of being caught up in something harmful, usually a crime, scandal, or conflict.
