Etymology
جَمْع is the verbal noun of the verb جَمَعَ, to gather or to collect. The triliteral root ج-م-ع carries the idea of bringing separate things together into one. The same root gives جُمُعة, Friday, the day of congregation, and جامِعة, university, a place that brings people together.
