This is the active participle of the verb عَدَلَ (ʿadala), to act justly and deal fairly. The triliteral root ع-د-ل carries the linked senses of justice, balance, and equivalence. The same root gives عَدْل (justice) and اعتِدال (moderation). It is a native Semitic root with no Indo-European source.
