Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ع-د-ل (ʿ-d-l), which carries the sense of being equal, straight, or in balance. عَدْل is the verbal noun of the verb عَدَلَ, "to act fairly." The link between equality and fairness runs through the whole root: to be just is to give each side its equal due.
