مُدَرِّب is the active participle of the Form II verb دَرَّبَ, 'to train.' That verb comes from the root د-ر-ب, which also gives دَرْب, 'path' or 'track.' The training sense grew from the idea of leading someone down a path again and again until it becomes habit.
