Etymology

خَمَّن means to guess or estimate. Classical Arabic lexicographers recorded the verb for stating something by conjecture, and several of them flagged it as a probable loan. The likeliest source is Persian گُمان (gumān), meaning supposition or doubt, with the initial g heard as kh in Arabic. The same root gave the common noun تَخْمين, an estimate or appraisal.
