Etymology

مُضْطَرّ is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِضْطَرَّ, 'to be compelled.' Both come from the triliteral root ض-ر-ر, which carries the sense of harm, pressure, and necessity. In the Form VIII template the original ت infix shifted to the emphatic ط after the emphatic ض, giving iḍṭarra. The word names a person driven to act by force of need rather than free choice.
