Word family
إِصابةa hit; injury; infection (verbal noun of أَصاب)
مُصيبةcalamity, misfortune
صَوابcorrectness, the right courseصَوَّبَto correct; to take aim
مُصابa casualty; one afflictedEtymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ص-و-ب (ṣ-w-b), which carries the sense of aiming, hitting a mark, and correctness. أَصابَ is the Form IV (causative) of this root, so its core meaning is to make a shot land, that is, to hit the target. From hitting a target it extended to striking a person with illness or disaster, and to being correct, since a right answer hits the mark. The same root gives صَواب, the right thing, and صَوْب, direction.
