Etymology
وَظِيفَة comes from the Arabic root و-ظ-ف, which carries the sense of assigning a fixed task or allotment. In classical usage the word meant a set daily ration or a duty laid on someone. From the idea of a regular assigned duty it grew to mean a post or job, and later a function in the abstract sense. The verb وَظَّفَ, to employ or to assign, shares the same root.
