Etymology
From the Semitic root ḥ-ḍ-r, which carries the idea of being present or settled. Arabic forms this verb by doubling the middle consonant ض, which turns 'be present' into 'make present,' that is, to prepare or make ready. The same root gives حَضَر, the settled town dwellers, set against the nomadic bedouin.
