Etymology

إِجازَة is the verbal noun of أَجازَ, meaning to permit or to authorize, from the root ج-و-ز, which carries the sense of passing or being allowed. The core idea is the granting of permission. From permission to be absent came the modern senses of leave and vacation. The older sense of a formal license survives in scholarly use.
