Etymology
خِطاب comes from the triliteral root خ-ط-ب, which means to address or speak to someone formally. It is the verbal noun of the verb خاطَبَ, to address. Arabic is a Semitic language, so the word has no Indo-European root. The same root gives خَطيب, an orator, and خُطبة, a sermon.
