Etymology

تَهْنِئَة is the verbal noun of the Form II verb هَنَّأَ, 'to congratulate.' It comes from the root ه-ن-أ, which carries the sense of being wholesome or pleasant, as in the adjective هَنيء. To congratulate someone is to wish that an event prove pleasant and happy for them. The same root gives هَناء, 'bliss,' and the table phrase هَنيئًا, said to wish someone an enjoyable meal.
