Etymology
قَبِيل comes from the Semitic root q-b-l, which carries the sense of facing, meeting, and accepting. From the picture of people set face to face came the meaning of a group or tribe, and from there the sense of a class or kind. The same root gives Arabic qabla (before), qabila (to accept), and mustaqbal (future).
