Etymology

The root ḥ-q-q is shared across the Semitic languages, with a base sense of engraving or fixing something firmly. From that came the idea of what is settled, true, and due, seen in the Arabic noun ḥaqq, meaning truth or right. Arabic built the verb ḥaqqaqa, to make true or to investigate, and taḥaqqaqa is its reflexive: to become true, or to make sure of the truth. Arabic is Semitic, so it has no Indo-European root.
