Etymology

قرصان is a loanword. It reached Arabic through Ottoman Turkish korsan, which came from Italian corsaro, which in turn went back to Medieval Latin cursarius, a raider, built on Latin cursus, a run or course. The word traveled with the raiders themselves along Mediterranean trade and war routes during the corsair era. Later, Arabic treated the loanword as if it had a native root, and coined the verb قرصن, to pirate or to hack, from it.
