Etymology
مَهْجُور comes from the triliteral Semitic root ه-ج-ر (h-j-r), meaning to leave, abandon, or emigrate. It is the passive participle, built on the مَفْعُول pattern, so it literally denotes something that has been left behind. The same root gives Arabic هِجْرَة (hijra), the term for the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, borrowed into English as hegira.
