Etymology
هِجْرَة is the verbal noun of the triliteral root ه-ج-ر, whose base verb هَجَرَ means to leave or abandon a place. In early Islamic history the word came to name one event in particular: Muhammad's move from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which set the start of the Islamic calendar. From that specific sense the word broadened back out to cover migration in general, from village-to-city moves to modern cross-border migration.
