Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ع-ش-ر (ʿ-sh-r), the same root behind عَشَرة, the Arabic word for ten. The pattern فُعْل turns the root into a fraction noun, so عُشْر literally means a ten-th, one part out of ten. In Islamic legal usage it took on the specific sense of a land tax or tithe levied on agricultural produce.
