Etymology
صِراع comes from the Semitic root ص-ر-ع (ṣ-r-ʿ), whose base verb صَرَعَ means to throw someone to the ground. The Form III verb صارَعَ means to wrestle with someone, and صِراع is its verbal noun, on the pattern فِعال. Over time the word moved from the wrestling mat to a general term for any struggle or conflict, political, personal, or dramatic.
