Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root kh-l-w, whose core sense is to be empty or free of something. Form V of the verb, takhallā ʿan, adds a reflexive prefix and doubled middle radical to mean to make oneself empty of something, in the sense of giving it up. Takhallī is simply the verbal noun of that verb. This is a Semitic root, not an Indo-European one.
