Etymology

Tashjīʿ is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the Form II verb shajjaʿa, meaning to encourage. Form II doubles the middle root letter, which often turns a basic meaning into a causative one. The root sh-j-ʿ carries the sense of courage or bravery, so tashjīʿ literally means the act of instilling courage in someone. This is a native Semitic root with no Indo-European origin.
